Global Shipping Delays: Challenges for Exporters in Q4 2026

Global container shipping schedules are becoming increasingly unpredictable, creating new challenges for exporters and importers preparing for the final quarter of 2026.

According to Xeneta's September Schedule Reliability Scorecard, global container shipping schedule reliability fell for the fourth consecutive month. The latest figures highlight growing uncertainty across major trade routes, particularly services connecting the Far East with Europe.

Global On-Time Arrivals Fall to 27%

Xeneta's latest report shows that global container shipping schedule reliability dropped to 27% in September 2026, down two percentage points from August. Meanwhile, average vessel delays increased to 6 days.

The situation was even more challenging on the Far East–Europe trade route, where schedule reliability fell to just 4%, with average delays reaching 9.9 days. This was the route's weakest performance since September 2021.

These figures highlight an important distinction for international businesses: securing vessel space does not necessarily guarantee that cargo will arrive at its destination on the expected date.

What Is Causing Shipping Delays?

Several factors are contributing to the deterioration in shipping reliability.

Weather-related disruptions: Typhoons affecting Asian ports contributed to vessel queues, port omissions, and changes to scheduled port calls.

Fuel cost pressures: Higher fuel costs and operational constraints add complexity to shipping schedules.

Peak-season demand: As businesses replenish inventory for the final quarter, increased demand can place additional pressure on shipping capacity.

When a vessel is delayed at one port, subsequent port calls and later sailings may also be affected, creating a chain reaction across the logistics network.

How Shipping Uncertainty Affects Exporters

Unreliable vessel schedules can affect more than transportation arrangements.

  • Production planning: Delayed materials or packaging components may disrupt manufacturing schedules.

  • Inventory management: Importers may need additional safety stock to reduce the risk of shortages.

  • Customer deliveries: Uncertain arrival dates can complicate warehouse planning and delivery commitments.

  • Seasonal demand: Delays may affect promotional plans and fourth-quarter inventory replenishment.

How Can Exporters Prepare?

Businesses can reduce the impact of shipping uncertainty by planning shipments earlier, checking carrier and route performance, maintaining close communication with freight forwarders, and allowing sufficient lead time for international deliveries.

Reviewing inventory requirements and coordinating production with shipping arrangements can also help minimize disruptions.
